You are a former of kidney stones. Drs. Basile and Patel are interested in trying to determine the cause for your kidney stones. The following studies will need to be performed. It is very important that they are performed in the proper manner. You will be required to collect your urine for two 24-hour periods and place each 24-hour collection in a separate bottle. Go to a laboratory that participates with your insurance company and ask for two collection bottles. Take the prescriptions with you so that the lab is aware of the tests that have been ordered. You should be given one bottle with a preservative in it, and one bottle without. Certain components in the urine only remain stable for analysis when collected with a preservative while other components in the urine are broken down by that same preservative. That is why it is important to collect your urine during two separate 24-hour periods, and in two separate containers. You are being given prescriptions to submit with each bottle. Please follow any additional instructions the laboratory may provide. To complete your workup you will also be asked to give blood samples for analysis as well. These samples will be taken at the same laboratory. You should make another appointment with Dr. Basile or Patel after all of these tests have been completed. At this follow up appointment they will review these results with you and then make recommendations to help try to get you out of the stone business, or at least decrease the frequency of your stone episodes. We have a 90% success rate in this regard. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact our office.
